Exercises and Stretches to Support Chiropractic Treatment at Home

As a chiropractor, one of the most common questions I hear from patients is:

“What can I do at home to help my back feel better between visits?”

The truth is that chiropractic adjustments are only one part of improving your spinal health. What you do outside the office matters too. Simple daily movement, stretching, and strengthening exercises can help support your treatment, reduce stiffness, and improve long-term results.

At  Pure Motion Chiropractic, I work with patients throughout Roscoe Village who are looking for natural low back pain relief and better mobility through personalized Chicago chiropractic care. Below are some of the most effective stretches for back pain and exercises for back pain that I commonly recommend to patients.

Why Movement Matters

Many cases of neck pain and low back pain are made worse by prolonged sitting, poor posture, muscle tightness, and lack of movement. Even if you receive regular chiropractic adjustments, tight muscles and weak supporting structures can continue pulling your body back into unhealthy patterns.

That’s why combining chiropractic care with proper stretching and strengthening is so important.

Cat-Cow Stretch

This is one of my favorite gentle mobility exercises for the spine.

How to Perform It

  • Start on your hands and knees
  • Slowly arch your back upward while tucking your chin
  • Then slowly lower your stomach while lifting your chest and head
  • Move slowly and repeat for 10–15 repetitions

Benefits

  • Improves spinal mobility
  • Reduces stiffness
  • Helps loosen the lower back and mid-back

This is an excellent stretch for patients dealing with morning stiffness or prolonged sitting.

Knee-to-Chest Stretch

This simple movement helps relieve tension in the lower back and hips.

How to Perform It

  • Lie on your back with knees bent
  • Bring one knee toward your chest
  • Hold for 20–30 seconds
  • Repeat on both sides

Benefits

  • Helps improve flexibility
  • Reduces low back tightness
  • Can help decrease pressure on irritated joints

This is one of the easiest and safest stretches for back pain that many patients can perform daily.

Pelvic Tilts

Pelvic tilts help strengthen the muscles that support the lower spine.

How to Perform It

  • Lie on your back with knees bent
  • Tighten your abdominal muscles
  • Flatten your lower back gently into the floor
  • Hold for a few seconds and repeat

Benefits

  • Strengthens core muscles
  • Improves posture
  • Supports spinal stability

Core strength plays a major role in preventing recurring low back issues.

Child’s Pose Stretch

This stretch is especially helpful after long days sitting at a desk or driving.

How to Perform It

  • Kneel on the floor
  • Sit your hips back toward your heels
  • Reach your arms forward
  • Hold for 30 seconds while breathing deeply

Benefits

  • Stretches the lower back
  • Relieves tension in the spine
  • Helps improve flexibility

Walking: The Most Underrated Exercise

One of the best exercises for back pain is simply walking consistently.

Walking promotes circulation, keeps joints mobile, and helps prevent stiffness without placing excessive stress on the spine. I often encourage patients to start with short daily walks and gradually increase activity as symptoms improve.

Consistency Is Key

One of the biggest mistakes people make is only stretching when they’re already in pain. Mobility and posture improve most when movement becomes part of your regular routine.

Even 10–15 minutes per day can make a significant difference over time.

Chiropractic Care + Home Exercise = Better Results

At  Pure Motion Chiropractic, my goal is not just temporary symptom relief. I want patients to feel empowered with tools they can use outside the office to support recovery and prevent future problems.

By combining chiropractic adjustments with targeted stretches for back pain and exercises for back pain, many patients experience:

  • Improved mobility
  • Reduced muscle tension
  • Better posture
  • Greater spinal stability
  • Long-term low back pain relief
